Sorry, your browser doesn't support Java(TM). The main duty of the Student Councillors is to act as the bridge between the school and the student body. To get more info on what we do within our committees, please refer to the section on "Who We Are".

However, there are more major aspects of our duties as Student Councillors. One of which is the organising of school activities. Every year, The Student Council is in charge of organising activities like those mentioned below.

February: Investiture

This is the last main event in which the Secondary 4 councillors are put in charge of. Every year, the responsibility falls on the Secondary 4 councillors' shoulders to plan an impressive investiture. The PRC Chairperson is placed in-charge of the event but the rest of the Council is divided into different groups like Decorations, Souvenirs, Reception etc. This being OUR event, we all work extremely hard to make every year's investiture a success!

February: Leadership Development Seminar

The Leadership Development Seminar is another annual event and it is for training the monitresses and CCA leaders of the school to be potential leaders. Workshops and leadership games are conducted for these students so that they may understand their roles as student leaders. Councillors also attend this camp but the main gist of the workshop is directed to the monitresses and CCA leaders, since the councillors have their own training camp. 2 Secondary 4 councillors are in charge of the camp but the whole Secondary 4 councillors chip in to help too. Work includes planning the program from scratch, finding suitable materials for the workshops, contacting the NYGHSC Alumni for their event as well as logistics concerning the allocation of venues and the ordering of food.

March: Annual Combined Sports Meet

Every year near the end of March, our school holds a combined sports meet with The Chinese High School and NYGHSC is greatly privileged to be given the honour of co-organising this event. This event is mainly under the FBI committee and every year, they would meet up with the Chinese High councillors to plan and discuss the sports meet. After which, the rest of the Council is involved in making souvenirs for the teachers in the Teachers' Race and in the painting of the school banners.

April: Earth Day

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Secondary 2 councillors try their best to enforce these positive habits into the rest of the school population by encouraging them to bring empty tin/aluminium cans to school and also old newspaper. In addition to that, potted plants are also brought in from nurseries to be put up for sale to the students and the teachers. The very first event that Secondary 2 councillors organise, they are closely-advised so that the event runs smoothly.

July: Youth Day

An event in which both Secondary 2 and 3 councillors are placed in charge of, it's the day when students fervently hope to be able to wear casual clothes to school. Our councillors try their best to propose for what the students hope for, and also carry out internal fun fairs whereby students make their own snacks and foodstuffs and also organise small games where prizes can be won. Song dedications are played over the P/A System for all to hear so as to provide a fun and hip atmosphere, transforming the school into a teenager's hangout for one day.

July: Annual Nationals Track and Field Meet

The main event in which cheering forms a great part of the program, the Track and Field team of NYGH obtains the hugest support ever each year by having the entire school population at the National Stadium. Since this involves the entire school, NYGHSC comes along and helps to control and lead the crowd in cheering. Other than leading the school in cheering, another important task is handed to the councillors: banner-painting. Each year we try to paint at least one banner for the Track and Field team, and a few days before the big day, councillors go down to the stadium with all the banners in their collection and tries to secure places in which to place the banners. For this day, the FBI head falls into leadership of the event.

September: Teachers' Day

The Sec. 2 councillors are in charge of organising this whole event. This means that they have to plan the program, make souvenirs for the teachers, print the program booklet and audition the performing classes. Teachers' Day is the third major event which the Secondary 2 councillors are involved in and it also serves as a form of training to prepare them for more demanding projects in the future.

November: Graduation Night

Graduation Night is an event mainly for the graduating batch of Secondary 4 students in Nanyang. The task of organising this event always goes to the Secondary 3 councillors. This is on very demanding project as the Secondary 4 students expect a lot for their special night. Thus, the Secondary 3 councillors always work very hard to make the night a fruitful one. Preparation work involves the hiring of a deejay, meeting up with him/her to discuss the program, decorating the intended venue, making souvenirs for the Secondary 4 students and the ordering of a buffet dinner. However, although the planning and organising work is done by the Secondary 3 councillors, the rest of the Council also play an important role by helping out with the labour work.

December: Registration & Orientation

This is another event which is organised by new Secondary 4 councillors. However, instead of having the whole batch of Secondary 4 councillors in charge of this, only the HRC Chairperson is placed in charge of Registration, and 2 are chosen to handle Orientation. This is a very, very important event which requires a lot of planning because it concerns the Secondary-1-to-be students and their parents. This makes Orientation a sort of "public event" and so requires everything to be planned to the exact detail. The I/Cs' job include the allocation of time and program for the girls as well as their parents and the allocation of duties to councillors (e.g. ushering, school tour, leading of classes etc.). Though the preparation is hectic, the results are really satisfying and this is the main essence of being a councillor in Nanyang.
